What Are Tension Structures?

Tension structures, or tensile fabric structures, are architecturally innovative forms of construction art that provide designers and end users a variety of aesthetic free-form canopy designs utilizing membranes such as PTFE-coated fiberglass or PVC. Design-build tensioned fabric structures are engineered and fabricated to meet worldwide structural, flame-retardant, a weather proofing, and natural forces requirements.

Membrane (Fabric) Structures

A membrane structure is a fabric membrane stretched taut over a frame or cable network, gaining its strength from tension rather than air pressure or heavy framing. Shade canopies, entry structures, and covered gathering spaces are the most common applications, built to stay up for the long term.

Cable-Stayed & Suspended Structures

A cable-stayed structure uses a network of tensioned steel cables to carry the load and shape the membrane, with little or no supporting frame underneath. Stadium roofs and large civic structures rely on this design when the span is too big for a frame-supported membrane to cover.

The cost of a tension structure varies significantly depending on, but not limited to, the size, design complexity, membrane material, structural steel requirements, site conditions, finishes, engineering, and installation requirements. For accurate budgeting, we recommend providing concept drawings, architectural plans, or project requirements so our team can develop a project-specific ROM budget or proposal.

A shade sail is a basic tensioned membrane system designed primarily to provide shade between structural supports or attachment points. A tension structure is a more comprehensive architectural system that uses a pre-tensioned membrane, structural framing, cables, and engineered connections to create larger spans and more complex forms. Both can be engineered for project-specific site and code requirements.

Yes. Building codes, engineering, curvature complexity, membrane material, structural requirements, site conditions, finishes, installation, and much more will be closely reviewed and integrated into the design to allow the tensile structure to accommodate for extreme weather conditions.

Eide provides and coordinates the specialty engineering required for the tension structure within our contracted scope. Our engineering process includes structural analysis, membrane design, member sizing, connection details, reaction loads, and engineered drawings as required. We work closely with the project architect, structural engineer, and general contractor to coordinate the tension structure with the overall project design.

Tension structures can utilize several types of architectural fabric membranes, including PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) coated polyester, PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) coated fiberglass, PTFE and PVC mesh, ePTFE (expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene), and HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) shade fabrics. Material selection depends on the project requirements, including span, design loads, waterproofing, fire-rating requirements, translucency, color, durability, maintenance, and budget. Our team can help determine the appropriate membrane based on the specific application and performance requirements.

Project timelines vary based on the size and complexity of the structure, engineering and submittal requirements, material selections, fabrication, finishes, site conditions, and installation requirements. Once the design and scope are established, Eide can provide a project-specific schedule for engineering, fabrication, and installation. Permitting, owner/architect review periods, site readiness, and work performed by others may also affect the overall project schedule.
