Project Details
The Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego (RMHCSD) expanded its campus to meet the growing needs of families seeking support while their children receive critical medical treatment at the nearby Rady Children’s Hospital. The new 12,500 SQ FT expansion project required the center courtyard on top of a 3-story building to be cleared for the construction of a new building to create twenty-seven (27) guest rooms, a play area, and administrative offices. To provide protection from rain and reduce daylight for sleep-deprived parents, Lahaina Architects designed overlapping wave-shaped tensioned structures to cover the outdoor walkways between the new central building and the East and West Wings.
Skyline Construction (formerly Prevost Construction) and Eide Industries were assigned the task to engineer, fabricate and install two sets of walkway structures between the new buildings on the third floor. Due to the narrow 11' wide clearances between the buildings on the third floor, a 110-ton Linkbelt hydraulic crane was utilized to hoist eight (8) fully assembled frame and fabric covers over the existing West Wing building. To ensure community safety and minimal disruption, all major lifts were executed during City-mandated Saturday street closures.
Eide Industries successfully engineered and fabricated the canopies, transported the fully assembled top frames and covers from Los Angeles to San Diego, coordinated the hoisting and installation of the eight 7’-6” wide x 29’-0” long x 14’-6” high tensioned fabric canopies precisely into place.
